Ladies, what makes a Real Man?

Updated: Oct 23, 2018

What makes a Real Man? Is it drinking coffee black or having a scruffy 5 o’clock shadow?

While these attributes might make a man look tough or good, we’d argue that none of them truly defines who he is. Instead, real manhood comes from within. We’ve compiled the top features that collectively produce a Real Man. How do the men in your life stack up?

Real Men are confident

Confidence is a key factor for producing a Real Man. However, there’s a difference between confidence and arrogance; a Real Man believes in himself without being cocky. He knows who he is and he doesn’t need to bring down others to feel good about himself. He is able to ask for help or celebrate your accomplishments without feeling devalued. More than being confident in himself, a Real Man is also confident in you. He won’t be intimidated by your dreams and instead will cheer you on without fail because he knows your success is important, to you, to him, and to your relationship.

Real Men take responsibility

A Real Man recognizes when he is wrong and isn’t afraid to own up to his mistakes. He understands when something is his own fault and won’t try to blame others. A real man also takes responsibility for his own personal development, recognizing that he’s not perfect. As much as none of us want to hear that we can be better, a real man doesn’t let his ego get in the way and embraces the opportunity to learn and grow.

A Real Man is respectful

He understands the difference between ‘yes’ and ‘no,’ and he doesn’t push. A Real Man is considerate of what others need, and he would never purposely harm another. He is able to put himself in someone else’s shoes and empathize with their struggle.

Real Men work hard

Everyone needs a break every once in awhile, but that doesn’t mean a Real Man is unwilling to put in work. He will do what needs to be done, no matter what it takes. That also means that a Real Man is willing to put both time and effort into making a relationship succeed. A real man can be counted on to contribute. He will volunteer to help out with anything, whether it’s housework, taking care of the kids, or talking through any challenges you might be facing at work or in life. You can depend on a Real Man to put in the time and effort to get the job done, no matter what it is.

A Real Man cares

A Real Man recognizes that he isn’t the only person in the universe. He cares about his family, friends, and the world around him. Most importantly, he cares about you. He listens to what you say and actually hears you. He remembers the little details that are important to you and tries to cater to your needs and desires, even without being asked.

We think John Wayne summed it up perfectly when he said “I define manhood simply: Men should be tough, fair, and courageous-- never petty, never looking for a fight, but never backing down from one either.”
